Excel Academy Charter School in Arvada has been closed since Monday, May 4 because of confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus (Swine Flu). Superintendent Cindy Stevenson made the decision to close the school on Sunday after consulting with local and state health officials. Yesterday, the Centers for Disease Control changed its recommendation for schools and is now saying the schools do not have to close if there is a case of H1N1. As a result of that decision, Excel Academy will reopen tomorrow, Thursday, May 7. The school has been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Jeffco Public Schools continues to work closely with our local and state health departments to follow directives and guidelines regarding the H1N1 influenza outbreak. At this time, the H1N1 influenza is characterized as a relatively mild flu-like illness in the U.S. and in our community. Because of this, the state health department has reported that it isn’t necessary to test or treat people who have a mild case of H1N1. The health department will not be contacting all individuals with mild flu like symptoms for H1N1 testing. Any decision to close schools will be carefully assessed with the state and local health departments and district leadership. Everyone is urged to follow the state health department guidelines for H1N1 influenza which can be found on its Website. The CSAP scores are in for Jeffco 3rd graders and it’s really good news. Last year 77 percent of Jeffco 3rd graders scored advanced or proficient in reading; this year that number has risen to 80 percent! Here’s how Jeffco compares to the state: “We are widening the gap with the state,” said Jeffco Superintendent Cindy Stevenson. “I am thrilled with our results and would like to thank our staff for working so hard to get this outcome for our 3rd graders.” What other questions do you have about third grade CSAP scores? Jared Polis Foundation award winner Little Elementary first-grade teacher Susan McIver was chosen as a 2009 Jared Polis Foundation Teacher Recognition award winner. McIver receives a $1,000 personal award and $1,000 teacher directed operating grant for Little Elementary. Colleagues describe McIver as an innovative and collaborative teacher leader who sets the bar high with many teachers modeling her solid instruction. Her classroom is a model classroom for the Public Education Business Coalition, a Colorado-based non-profit committed to strengthening public schools. She is recognized as a master teacher by many reading experts and demonstrates this by producing amazing results. Last day for the 2009 Key Communique survey if you have not yet submitted your feedback. The survey will close on Thursday, May 7, 2009. There are over 1,500 community leaders in the Jeffco Public Schools Key Communicator Network. As opinion leaders, the district depends on your voice to inform the community about important school district issues. We also need to hear from you about the effectiveness of this important communication program. Thank you to everyone who has submitted their thoughts.
