Jeffco Board of Education looks for community feedback on budget Members of the Jefferson County Board of Education are asking for the community’s help in making tough decisions about the school district’s budget. The district will need to cut at least $35 million between 2009 and 2012 after voters rejected the bond and mill levy measures on the November ballot. The board has received recommendations from staff and community budget workgroups and wants to continue to gather feedback from many different voices in Jefferson County. “These are very difficult decisions and we want the best thinking of our various stakeholder groups,” said Jefferson County Board of Education president, Scott Benefield. Board members will hold a series of community meetings, “Challenges and Choices”, in early January to gather community feedback. “Because our schools are such a vital part of the community, we want our neighbors to weigh in on what they think is important for us to keep in the budget; that dialogue will be critical as we make these tough choices,” said Benefield. The dates, locations and times of the “Challenges and Choices” community forums are: January 3 – 10:30-11:30 a.m., Belmar Public Library, 555 S. Allison Pkwy., Lakewood Provide your input on the budget through an online survey A number of Jeffco schools will host information meetings for prospective students and their families. The purpose of the meetings is to help families become familiar with school offerings, curriculum and the enrollment process Financial Oversight Committee seeks to fill vacant positions Nominations are being accepted from citizens to fill two volunteer positions to serve on the seven-member Financial Oversight Committee or FOC. Members must have a working familiarity with finance and accounting practices and business management expertise with large organizations. The FOC’s primary function is to assist the Board of Education with oversight by reviewing financial reports and other financial information. Choice enrollment applications due by January 24, 2009 Families who wish to enroll their student in a school other than their neighborhood school must complete a Choice Enrollment Application, available at schools or from the menu below, and submit it to their school of choice. Applications for First Round Choice Enrollment are accepted in January for the following school year. Round One Enrollment will be held on January 6 – 24, 2009 for the 2009-2010 school year. Students are accepted on a space available basis. Round one applications are prioritized through a lottery process. Waiting lists are created if applicants exceed space available at the school. A separate application must be completed and submitted for each child. Open enrollment may affect athletic eligibility. If a student is not accepted at a school during the first round Choice Enrollment, the student will remain on the prioritized waitlist and carried over to the second round which begins in February and ends in August. Check with the school for exact dates. Applications during the second round are added to the prioritized round one list on a first-come, first-served basis. Preschool and kindergarten registration begins in January Registration for preschool and kindergarten begins in mid January for the 2009-10 school year.
