District addresses school safety The tragedy that occurred at Platte Canyon High School September 27 has deeply affected the Colorado school community. The hearts of Jeffco Public Schools students and staff go out to the family of Emily Keyes and to all the families affected by this tragedy. The district has offered support to the Platte Canyon community in any way that would be useful. Additionally, several Jeffco Public Schools counselors have been in Bailey helping with mental health support since Wednesday. The Jeffco Public Schools community understands all too well how difficult the next few weeks and months will be for the people in Bailey, and the district will continue to offer comfort and assistance in any way it can. The safety of Jeffco Public School students and staff is the greatest concern for the district. Since 2001, the district has done a thorough evaluation of all safety procedures and developed a districtwide safety plan and crisis response plan. Superintendent Dr. Cindy Stevenson has sent a letter to every family in Jeffco Public Schools outlining the processes. As Key Communicators, please help communicate this information to the community. Jeffco Public Schools will host a dedication ceremony at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 3 for the new Dunstan Middle School. The school, which replaced the original facility, is located at 1855 S. Wright Street in Lakewood. Scheduled to speak at the ceremony are Lakewood Mayor Steve Burkholder, Jeffco Public Schools Board of Education member Sue Marinelli and school superintendent Dr. Cindy Stevenson. An open house will follow the ceremony. The $16,498 million, 120,840 square foot school is designed to accommodate up to 840 students. The original Dunstan Middle School, which was outdated and found to be too costly to renovate, was razed in mid-June. With the completion of the school, the district now has 150 community, option and charter schools serving more than 84,000 students. Funding for the new school, which was completed on-time and on-budget, came from capital improvement bonds approved by voters in 2004. The Board of Education holds study/dialogue sessions (Seminar Room, 4th floor) and business meetings (Board Room, 5th floor) at the Educational Services Center, 1829 Denver West Drive, Bldg #27, Golden, unless otherwise noted.
