Wayne Carle Middle School dedication set for Sept. 14

Jeffco Public Schools will host a dedication ceremony at 9 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 14, for the new Wayne Carle Middle School.  The school, named in honor of a former Jeffco Public Schools' superintendent, is located at 10200 West 100th Ave in Westminster .

Scheduled to speak at the ceremony are school namesake Dr. Wayne Carle, Westminster Mayor Nancy McNally, Jeffco Public Schools Board of Education member Scott Benefield and school superintendent Dr. Cindy Stevenson.  The outdoor ceremony will also feature students and community members.

Carle served three years as superintendent of the largest school district in Colorado .  With the completion of the school, the district now has 150 community, option and charter schools serving more than 84,000 students. Wayne Carle Middle School was built to eliminate overcrowding at cross-town Mandalay Middle School .

The $14.1 million 99,242 square-foot school, built from bonds approved by voters in 1997, is designed to accommodate up to 560 students.  A total of 327 students are currently enrolled for the 2006-2007 school year.  The two-story school has environmental-friendly features throughout, including an ice thermal air conditioning system (ice made overnight with the cold air dispersed the following day), day-lighting (windows designed to maximize the sun and minimize electrical lighting) and xeriscaping in natural areas of the 25-acre site.

The seventh and eighth grade school primarily receives students from Lukas, Witt and the new Meiklejohn elementary schools.  Students graduating to the ninth grade will go to Standley Lake High School or Ralston Valley High School depending on their home location or school choice option.

The school's mascot is the bald eagle, in honor of the pair of eagle's nesting just west of the school.  Greg Bushey is the school's first principal.

Jeffco Public Schools embarks on Technology Equity pilot project

The Jeffco Public Schools' Technology Equity Study Group was formed in January 2006 to evaluate and make recommendations on the best way to address the inequity of technology that exists in the district's 150 schools. Members of the study group included principals, assistant principals, school-based staff, community members and district support staff. Instead of just recommending that the district invest in hardware, the group suggested a holistic approach to the problem which also included:

  • putting money into training for staff in the use of computers and instructional technology programs

  • providing site-based technology support

  • embedding the technology into district curriculum.

It became clear to the study group that significant funding would be needed if their recommendations were to succeed. Under the Budgeting for Results process, $1 million was given as a one-time strategic investment to fund a pilot technology equity program to prove the concept of the four equity pillars. The money will be used to fund the following four components (equity pillars):

  • fund tools and programs to embed the technology in core district curriculum

  • provide staff development for participating teachers and other school staff

  • provide site-based tech support

  • provide mobile technology (laptops, carts, projectors) to a small team of participating teachers in each school.

Twelve elementary schools have been selected to take part in the pilot program. They are: Columbine Hills, Leawood, Parmalee, Martensen, Vivian, Wilmore Davis, Patterson, Foothills, Green Mountain, Campbell, Zerger and Witt. The following criteria were used in the first step of the school selection process:

  • Elementary level

  • Less than 350 students

  • Free and reduced lunch of less than 54%.

The schools selected have agreed to commit a significant amount of time and staff resources to this project with a goal of making a difference for students. It is the hope that this Technology Equity program will move the district as a whole into the very best of 21st century learning.
